ROMANS 12:2
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
As Christians, we are called to be counter-cultural, to literally live “opposite” to the darkness of this world. Jesus was the definition of counter- cultural living in His day. He often challenged many of the commonly-held beliefs and practices of even the religious elite at the time. However, living counter- cultural often comes with a price. It can be difficult to stand firm in our beliefs in a world increasingly characterized by unbelief. As a result, believers may be misunderstood and criticized by family and friends, labeled unfairly, judged for our convictions and even experience false accusations. Surrounded by a 24/7 media cycle, the ubiquity of social media, and a culture often defined by outrage rather than critical thinking, the tension of holding on to unpopular beliefs can be exhausting and even painful.
